About this site

Learn-timestables.com is a completely web-based program which helps children to practice their times tables in an effective and fun way. The idea for the program was born out of the daily practice of primary school teaching. It combines all imaginable methods to practice the times tables.

It has proven to be useful to neglect the times tables which the child already knows. When practicing, the focus should be on sections that have not been mastered yet. This is why learn-timestables.com uses a ‘color system’. When the child is able to answer the exercise within 4 seconds, the color turns green; within 6 seconds yellow, within 8 seconds orange and when it needs longer than 8 seconds it will turn red. The frequency at which the program is asking the various exercises is in the ratio of red:orange:yellow:green 8:6:4:1. In this way, the exercises that need more practicing are asked more often, and the exercises that are mastered perfectly are only asked to avoid that they will be forgotten – and they are also there to encourage the child.

Finally, this program makes it fun for children to practice the times tables. It uses a unique rewarding system: the children are able to earn some "money" and buy their own reward in the “shop” of learn-timestables.com!!!

Extra

On this page you will find extra information regarding the practicing of multiplication tables in elementary school.

In the first grade and second grade of elementary school children need to learn the times tables. There are a lot of children that have a hard time to learning the times tables and then to remind the times tables as well. This is the reason why the times tables are often repeated through the 4th and 5th grade. When children have a hard time to learn the times tables it is useful to keep track which sums that have already been mastered and which ones haven’t, as is done on this website. There are however several important tricks or strategies that simplify practicing times tables. It’s even so that without these strategies everybody would have trouble to memorize this many sums. Here’s an overview of important strategies that should be offered to children in the first grade and second grade frequently:

  • reversals: 5 x 8 = 40 - 8 x 5 = 40
  • doubling 2 × 4 = 8 - 4 × 4 = 16
  • halve: 10 × 8 = 80 - 5 × 8 = 40
  • one more time: 5 × 8 = 40 - 6 × 8 = 40 + 8 = 48
  • one time less: 5 × 8 = 40 - 4 × 8 = 40 - 8 = 32
  • add a zero or remove a zero: 1 × 5 = 5 - 10 × 5 = 50 en 10 × 4 = 40 - 1 × 4 = 4
  • All the effort made to learn the times tables is definitely not a waste of time. The automated multiplications serve as an intermediate step towards being able to calculate larger and more complicated multiplications in the third, fourth and fifth grade. If for any reason children don’t know the simpler times tables, they will get stuck when trying to calculate the more complicated ones.

The method used on this site can also be used on paper with children. When for example the times table of 5 is being practiced sums that a child controls are removed. In the end no sums are left and the child knows one or multiple times tables.

    Good luck practicing!
